Psychedelic Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) combines psychotherapy with higher doses of ketamine to create a deeply internal healing experience.
Unlike low-dose, psycholytic ketamine sessions, psychedelic sessions often involve a significant shift in consciousness. Clients may experience:
- Vivid imagery
- Symbolic experiences
- Altered perceptions of time and self
- New perspectives on longstanding challenges
- A sense of connection to something larger than themselves.
Every experience is unique. Some people revisit important memories from a new perspective. Others encounter emotions, insights, or experiences that are difficult to put into words. Many describe these sessions as meaningful, profound, and transformative.
What Does Ketamine Feel Like?
During a psychedelic ketamine session, awareness typically turns inward. While you remain physically safe and supported throughout the experience, your attention may become absorbed in thoughts, emotions, memories, imagery, or symbolic experiences.
Many clients report:
• A sense of distance from everyday worries
• Increased compassion toward themselves
• New perspectives on long-standing struggles
• Emotional breakthroughs
• A feeling of greater openness and possibility.
Because these experiences can be powerful, preparation and support are essential parts of the process.
How Does Psychedelic Ketamine Therapy Work?
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy at Folsom Trauma Therapy includes three phases: preparation, dosing, and integration.
Preparation Sessions
Before your first dosing session, you will meet with my partner psychiatric provider for medical screening and prescription evaluation. Together, we will also spend time preparing psychologically for the experience. We discuss your goals, intentions, hopes, concerns, and any questions you may have. Creating a supportive mindset before the session helps maximize the therapeutic benefits of the experience.
Dosing Session
On the day of your session, you self-administer ketamine according to your prescriber’s instructions while I remain present to support you throughout the process. Most people spend approximately 50 minutes in a deeply internal state before gradually returning to ordinary awareness. As the experience concludes, we begin discussing what felt most meaningful or important. The entire session typically lasts between two and two-and-a-half hours. Because ketamine affects coordination and judgment, you will need someone to drive you home afterward.
Integration Sessions
Integration is where lasting change begins. Within a few days of the dosing session, we meet again to explore the insights, emotions, memories, and experiences that emerged. Together, we connect those experiences to your goals and identify meaningful changes you want to make in your life. Depending on your needs, integration may include EMDR, Brainspotting, mindfulness, body-centered psychotherapy, or other trauma-focused approaches.
How Long Does Ketamine Therapy Last?
Most clients benefit from a series of six to eight dosing sessions over several months. Research and clinical experience suggest that repeated sessions often build on one another, creating cumulative benefits over time. Your total number of dosing sessions may be more or fewer, depending on your needs and psychiatric provider’s recommendation. An integration session must take place within a week (ideally within 72 hours) following the dosing session.
